Helping Children with Obesity

In this 4-part video clip, which can also be found on Dr. Joanne Haupert’s YouTube channel, Dr. Joanne gives practical advice to parents of a child fighting obesity.

Nutrition is both what is given to and ingested by the child, but also the way and circumstances in which food is given and taken.

Unsurprisingly, Dr. Haupert mentions sodas as being highly unsuitable to a child’s diet, but she also dispells the false notion that fruit juices are better than sodas. Most fruit juices found in our grocery stores are processed to the degree that pulp and fibers — essential healthy components of fruits — are gone and only sugar remains. Such juices are to be banned from your fridge and cupboards if you want your child to return to health.

As a chiropractor Dr. Joanne will obviously mention the importance of a healthy nervous system. Tension and misalignment of the spine will impact digestion and result in a degradation of the child’s health.

Dr. Joanne insists that wheat as it is processed today is essentially sugar. Junk food. Removing wheat from a child’s diet will help managing the child’s weight.

Another part of Dr. Joanne’s video alludes to the “5-minute rule” allowing the brain and the gastric system to sync up so the former receives the correct signals from the latter and not false signals of “still being hungry”. Portion control accompanies this technique to avoid overfeeding children simply because the latter are deceived by a disconnection between brain and stomach.

Lastly, Dr. Haupert covers the way children take their meals. Meals are better eaten around the family table where parents can help their children be aware of what they eat — smell, color, taste. This mindfulness removes the “mechanical act of eating” that occurs when children eat in front of the TV. Mindfulness enable children to enjoy their food more, and eat less.
